SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS – PAINT BY NUMBERS ART

If you’re looking for something to keep your young ones occupied on the weekend or during the school holidays, look no further than paint by numbers.

Paint by numbers is simple, yet addictive fun. It is an artistic or craft style project activity where you purchase a canvas with an image already (lightly) printed on it separated by areas with different numbers.

The numbers (usually from 1-24 for a standard kit or around 6-8 for kids) each correspond to the colour of paint to use in those areas on the canvas. So, for instance, the paint colour yellow might be #1 and orange might be #2. If there are 15 areas marked by #1 on your canvas painting, they should all be painted yellow. If there are, for example, 10 areas marked on the canvas as #2, they will all need to be painted orange! By midway you’ll start to see the vivid figure or object really taking shape, and by the end, you’ll have painted your own masterpiece.

IT’S QUICK TO SET UP, AND PACK AWAY

Pick a table or area inside (or outside if weather permits) to lay a protective covering and set up the easel. You may want to use clips to secure the canvas to any backboard (rigid cardboard cut to shape will do) so it doesn’t wiggle. Add some cups for the brushes and clean water, pop your kids in their ‘play’ clothes or painting smocks and you’re good to go! You don’t even need a palette as the paints come in their own little tubs.

IT UNLEASHES CREATIVITY AND PRIDE

Most kids enjoy getting busy with paints and creating something with their own hand to be proud of. This activity of painting by numbers also taps into the artistic side of their brain and lets them express themselves freely. It’s a great thing to experience for any child but also nice for kids who are more sporty or book smart to try something different every now and then! Once they are finished, let them have a say in how they can showcase their finished pieces - perhaps a picture frame, on their bedroom wall, or in an art folio for older kids.

IT’S FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Painting by numbers suits a range of different skill levels; older children who want a challenge will like the more advanced designs and there are usually special kits for the 8-10 year old range. For younger kids, mum or dad can always step in to help – in fact, parents often love the process of paint by numbers as much (sometimes more!) than the kids do. It’s not often you get to step away from the 9-5 grind and do something so light, colourful and arty (unless you’re an artist)!
